Oral Surgery - Bone Grafts

What Is A Bone Graft And Do I Need One?

Bone Grafts Explained

A bone graft is a procedure in which bone is taken and placed in an area that needs bone. The classic example is where a patient has a tooth extracted and wants to have an implant placed, and needs bone in the area to support the implant. In this case, the tooth is extracted, and the bone graft is placed. And then, a few months, later the implant can often be placed. Our preferred approach for bone grafts is the Osteogen Plus system.

Are Bone Grafts Safe?

Yes. Very safe. There are a number of options when it comes to the source of a bone graft, including from donor bone or from animal bone. Each clinical situation is different, and we will discuss the best approach with you.

I Don’t Know If I Want An Implant. Should I Have A Bone Graft?

It depends. If you are considering the possibility of having an implant in the future, then we do recommend that you have a bone graft placed. And even if you elect not to have an implant, and in the future replace the missing teeth with a removable partial denture, the extra bone will certainly help to provide support for the prosthesis. Once again, we’ll discuss the treatment plan with you and we will work with you to decide if a bone graft is the appropriate treatment for you.
